AI in real estate

Algorithmic platforms are increasingly shaping knowledge-intensive professions and redefining professional expertise. This study examines how real estate agents experience and respond to the home valuation algorithm Zestimate on Zillow.

Based on interviews with 15 agents, the findings show that publicly available algorithmic estimates reshape professional practices and client–agent relationships by reducing information asymmetry and increasing transparency, monitoring, and accountability. As a result, agents adapt their roles by developing reintermediation practices, such as interpreting algorithmic estimates, explaining discrepancies between algorithmic and professional valuations, and strengthening client relationships.

Overall, the study demonstrates how algorithmic systems can disrupt traditional professional authority while also prompting professionals to redefine and reinforce their value through interpretation, contextual expertise, and relational work.
